INFLUENCES OF WATERSCAPE PATTERNS AND SOUNDS ON EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES

Ming-Chia Lai, Yann-Jou Lin

The purpose of this study was to explore the influences of waterscape patterns and sounds on emotional experiences. Four principal emotional experiences were found by factor analysis: depressed-bored, excited-pleased, serene-calm, and alarmed-afraid. The emotional experiences will be different with the various waterscape patterns and sounds. The differences between the influences of waterscape patterns and sounds on emotional experiences varied in the type of waterscape.

THE PROCESS OF LANDSCAPE PREFERENCE FORMATION

Jia-Jy Yen

The "compensatory rule" and "non compensatory rule" are two main solution ways when a consumer making his/her choice. From related literature review, the formation of landscape preference can be interpreted by consumer choice behavior properly. Based on the theory, this study used qualitative method to analyze the formation of landscape preference. "Think aloud method" was used here to find the decisive elements which influencing individual's preference, and to exam when are they chosen as decisive elements. Therewith, a frame of individual preference process including decision rule during different stage of the process was constructed by the researcher. A panel of fifteen graduate students in landscape related discipline were asked to participate and requested to compare ten sets of five pictures each and to list their preference order. The results show that the most important elements which influencing landscape preferences among these respondents are: degree of development, man-made facility, mountainscape, waterscape, degree of orcer, and recreational activity. Meanwhile, most of the respondents use non compensatory rule to heip them simplified choice alternatives and then, use compensatory rule, to achieve the final decision making. The results suggest that a preference formation frame constructed in this qualitative way can help further research investigate more detail relationship among these elements and decision rules in sophisticated statistic method.

VISUAL IMPACT STUDIES FOR SIMULATION LANDSCAPE OF REFUSE INCINERATION PLANT

Jing-Shoung Hou, Yorrick Yoe

In Taiwan, the refuse incineration plant has been the most important public facility. This demands the construction of increasing numbers of refuse incineration plants which are having a significant impact on the environment, e.g., air, water, noise, and visual impacts. The purposes of this study were to focus on the visual impact and to address plant design, site selection, and human landscape perception.
In the research, computer simulation methodology was used. Two refuse incineration plants were simulated on six objects of the environment which were chosen based on complexity and natural properties. Two groups of subjects, representing familiarity and nonfamiliarity with refuse incineration plants, were asked to rate the scenic quality of those scenes, and also to complete a six-item, five-position Likert scale measuring attitudes toward refuse incineration plants.
The following are the conclusions of the research: 1. The design of refuse incineration plants must consider the degree of compatibility between facility elements in the scenery and their surroundings, and not in the plant design itself. 2. The higher the degree of nature, the greater is the visual impact; the higher the degree of complexity, the less is the visual impact, which is the same with the concept of visual absorption capacity (VAC). 3. As attitudes toward refuse incineration plant pollution become more agreeable, the visual impacts tend to increase, particularly for plants in natural settings; inversely, as attitudes toward plant functions and buildings become more agreeable, the visual impact tends to decrease. But the effect of familiarity on visual impact was not demonstrated.

AN EVALUATION METHOD OF VISUAL LANDSCAPE RESOURCES FOR THE SELECTION OF RECREATIONAL ROUTES

Hsiao-Lin Wang, Chiang-Li Chiu

Most of the setting of recreational routes focus on the linkage between different areas. Less considerations of characteristics of environment and aesthetic quality of visual landscape in planning process are taken into account. As a result, natural environments and visual landscape resources are damaged which affect the quality of recreation.
The study based on aesthetic quality of visual landscape with the premise of protection of natural resources tried to examine the evaluation system for assessing visual landscape resource in the analysis of allocation suitability of recreational routes. A questionnaire survey was carried via Analytic Hierarchy Process that an evaluation system thus established. Furthermore, with the aid of Geographic Information System, this study tried to undergo the mapping analysis on selecting suitable allocation of recreational routes, so as to improve the relationship of interaction between visual landscape resources and environmental characteristics. It is hoped that the system will provide planners and decision-makers as reference for the planning of recreational routes.

VISUAL COMPLEXITY OF ROAD LANDSCAPE

Albert c. Taso, Tse-chung Wang

The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of the visual complexity of road landscape and the relationship between visual complexity of road landscape and preference. The study proved that there was an apparent difference between visual complexity and preference of road landscape according to the different types of landscape. So, the study used the film sample of road landscape and discussed separately based on nature prominence landscape, human prominence landscape, urban landscape, and wholly samples by the types of landscape.

A STUDY OF RESIDENTS' SETTING DEMANDS TO THE INNER COURT OF THE AMALGAMATED DWELLING BASED ON P.O.E.

Mei-Hsien Liu, Der-Lin Ling, Hsiao-Lin Wang

The object of this study is to find the setting demand for the inner court of amalgamated dwelling. The theories of P.O.E. and recreation demand are applied in this investigation.
The first step in this study is that of reviewing related researches and proposing an evaluation mode. The method of questionnaire interview is applied for data collection in this study and analyzed by statistical methods. Five amalgamated dwellings with inner court in the Hsin-Yi Planned District and the north part of the Hsing-An Public Housing are selected as samples.
The results of the statistical data show that the residents in the Hsin-Yi Planned District are in general those having higher income and achieving success in their profession. Therefore, the inner court is a place that reveals the dwelling's value for them and only limited activity and facility demanded for simple static recreation is required. Hsing-An Public Housing is renovated from an old community. There are many retired soldiers' families and a lot of families have children. The inner court is a place for outdoor activity, taking exercise, and playing games. The demand varies based on the residents' characteristics.
